What Is a Steelbook? (And Why Collectors Love Them)
If you've spent any time in gaming communities, you've heard the word steelbook. But if you're new to the world of physical media collecting, it might not be immediately obvious what all the fuss is about. Here's the complete guide.
What is a steelbook?
A steelbook is a game, film, or album packaged inside a metal tin case rather than the standard plastic case. They're typically produced as limited or premium editions, sold at a slightly higher price than standard releases, and feature enhanced artwork that takes advantage of the metallic surface — embossing, spot-gloss finishes, and full-bleed illustrations that wrap all the way around the case.
The name "steelbook" is actually a brand name owned by Scanavo, but it's become a generic term for any metal game or film case, much like "hoover" became a generic term for vacuum cleaners.
Why do collectors love them?
A few reasons:
The art. Steelbook artwork is often dramatically better than the standard release. Artists are commissioned specifically for the steelbook edition and the brief allows for more creative, distinctive imagery. Some steelbook editions have become iconic in their own right.
The feel. There's something genuinely satisfying about holding a metal case. It has weight and presence that plastic simply doesn't.
The scarcity. Steelbooks are almost always limited runs. Once they sell out, they're gone — which means they tend to hold or increase in value over time for popular titles.
The physicality. As games move increasingly toward digital, physical steelbooks become more meaningful. They're a statement that this game, this moment, matters enough to own properly.
How to display steelbooks
The traditional method is a shelf, but a shelf hides the front and rear and doesn't do justice to the full artwork, especially for steelbooks that wrap around the case.
A better option is wall display. Our MagLevate Art magnetic wall mount was designed specifically for this — it uses powerful magnets to mount your steelbook flat against the wall, making it appear to float. No drilling that wall of yours and you can swap steelbooks in seconds.
For those who want a more traditional framed look, our Steelbook range offers Exhibition-style frames that display the full front cover of your steelbook behind UV-protective acrylic.
